चन्द्रगुप्त द्वितीय महान जिनको संस्कृत में विक्रमादित्य या चन्द्रगुप्त विक्रमादित्य के नाम से जाना जाता है; गुप्त वंश के एक महान शक्तिशाली सम्राट थे। उनका राज्य 380-412 ई तक चला जिसमें गुप्त राजवंश ने अपना शिखर प्राप्त किया। गुप्त साम्राज्य का वह समय भारत का स्वर्णिम युग भी कहा जाता है। चन्द्रगुप्त द्वितीय महान अपने पूर्व राजा समुद्रगुप्त महान के पुत्र थे। उसने आक्रामक विस्तार की नीति एवं लाभदयक पारिग्रहण नीति का अनुसार करके सफलता प्राप्त की। चंद्रगुप्त द्वितीय विक्रमादित्य (380 ई - 412 ई.) समुद्रगुप्त के एरण अभिलेख से स्पष्ट है कि उनके बहुत से पुत्र पौत्र थे, किंतु अपने अंतिम समय में उन्होंने चंद्रगुप्त को अपना उत्तराधिकारी नियुक्त किया। चंद्रगुप्त द्वितीय एवं परवर्ती गुप्तसम्राटों के अभिलेखों से भी यही ध्वनित होता है कि समुद्रगुप्त की मृत्यु के उपरांत चंद्रगुप्त द्वितीय ही गुप्तसम्राट् हुए। किंतु इसके विपरीत, अंशरूप में उपलब्ध 'देवीचंद्रगुप्तम्‌' एवं कतिपय अन्य साहित्यिक तथा पुरातात्विक अभिलेख संबंधी प्रमाणों के आधार पर कुछ विद्वान्‌ रामगुप्त को समुद्रगुप्त का उत्तराधिकारी प्...
